NELA Scholarships Announced

NELA just announced the winners of their 2008 awards scholarships for full and part-time students. In case you aren't familiar with these awards, the awards for full time students are $2,000, and those for part-time students are $1,000. According to the NELA website, "These awards provide financial assistance for qualifying students pursuing Master's degrees in Library and Information Science. They are open to New England residents who plan to continue their careers in the region. Students attending an ALA-accredited library school or program offered in New England or New York, or an accredited on-line program offered elsewhere, who have a demonstrated need for financial assistance, may apply."

NELLS application deadline extended

The application deadline for the New England Library Association's leadership symposium, NELLS, has been extended to February 29th.

NELLS will be held July 28th through August 1st at the Rolling Ridge Conference Center in North Andover, MA.

Who can attend? NELLS students will be library professionals, paraprofessionals, or volunteers (Trustees, Friends, etc.) in mid-career (3 to 15 years experience in or with libraries). Attendees may be recommended by someone or may make their own application for this leadership training. Each student must be a member of his or her state association or NELA in order to apply.

New Round of Loans and Scholarships for Graduate Study for 2008

Reminder! 2008 brings a new round of a loans and scholarships available to fund graduate study in library science.

Qualified applicants are residents of New Hampshire, enrolled in an ALA accredited school of Library or Information Science, and members of NHLA.

The F. Mabel Winchell Loan Fund is a $1,000 interest-free loan to be repaid within 5 years. The Rosalie Norris Scholarship is a $1,000 grant.

The next application deadline is April 1, 2008.

** ACRL/NEC Annual Conference Scholarships for Librarians and Library Staff (six scholarships) 

** ACRL/NEC Annual Conference Scholarships for Library School Students (six scholarships)

** Continuing Education Scholarship (one scholarship; up to $500)

** Best Paper Award (one $250 award)

Need Money to Go to ALA in 2008?

I don't know if you read this recent post on the blog Information Wants To Be Free, but it is timely given the following information about securing funding for attending ALA Annual in 2008...

Do you want to attend ALA Annual 2008 in Anaheim, CA, but you're light on the travel funds? Apply by December 15, 2007 for the Shirley Olofson Memorial Award and you may receive a $1000 check to help defray the cost of attendance!

Applicant must:

  1. Be a member of ALA and NMRT
  2. Be active in the library profession
  3. Show promise or activity in the area of professional development
  4. Have valid financial need
  5. Have attended no more than five ALA annual conferences

Mini-Money Grants...What are you waiting for?

Did you know that NHLA members can apply for grants of up to $200 to be used for a broad range of continuing education opportunities? Thanks to "Mini-Money Grants" made available from the Adam & Jane MacDonald Fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, grant recipients can use the money for credit or non-credit courses, workshops and seminars, State Library Education modules, NELINET classes, online education classes and classes offered by local educational institutions.  (The funds may not be used for conference attendance.)
