READS-TO-GO Suggests

A few of our book discussion kits do not circulate as often as they should.  The RTG committee will try to promote some of these titles through our blog

The first suggested title, Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, appears on the blog today.

If your library hosts a RTG kit, and you'd like to see it promoted, please contact me at dmayr@nesmithlibrary.org.  Thanks.

READS-TO-GO: How to Contact

If you want to contact the READS-TO-GO chairperson, Diane Mayr, please note that the address on the RTG flyer for libraries will probably have the wrong email address on it.  (If you'd like, you can download an updated flyer here.)  Please use dmayr@nesmithlibrary.org.  You can also contact RTG through our blog, and, as always, you may look in the NHSL's NH Library Directory

If you check out the blog, there is a new posting on Discussion Companions.  Please use the comments section to offer your own suggestions.

READS-TO-GO Question

Visit the RTG blog at www.reads-to-go.org for news about the RTG program.  Several new kits are soon to be announced, so if you want to be the first to know, you can sign up to receive notices of new postings.  Yesterday's post was about a kit title that would make interesting reading for any group meeting this month, plus, there's a link to recipes for treats to serve to your hungry readers.

If your library hosts a kit, and it is sitting on the shelf, send me a message at reads-to-go@comcast.net and I can post a little teaser to drum up some business.

READS-TO-GO Update

I hope you've had the opportunity to look at our new BLOG.

If you host a RTG kit I would like to ask that you check the information listed for your library for accuracy.  This information is found under "Kit Titles."  If your kit was donated by a group, could you please send me the donor information so that I can give the group proper acknowledgment of their gift on the site.

Also, I'd like to recommend signing up to receive email updates to the page (look for the subscribe option on the right-hand side of the page).  We plan to put up a post whenever a new title is ready to go.  Many thanks.

New Site for READS-TO-GO

READS-TO-GO now has a blog!  You can get to it in three ways:  www.reads-to-go.org   www.readstogo.org  or www.reads-to-go.blogspot.com.  We have set it up to function as a website.  All the information you need should be available through links on the right hand side of the page.  If we've left anything out, please let us know.  There has already had a comment about the lists of titles requiring too much scrolling, so, over the next week we hope to cut some of the summaries to one paragraph to ease that problem a little.

Please feel free to use the comment feature, or the "contact us" link.  Thanks for all your patience over the past two years in which the kit program has been active.  We look forward to providing you with more kits in the near future--keep checking the blog!  Or, better yet, sign up on the blog to receive an email whenever a new post has been added.

READS-TO-GO

The RTG committee wants to thank the NHLA Conference committee for a fabulous 2 days!  Our "READS-TO-GO Wants to Know" session was well-attended and provided us with much to think about.  We hope everyone's questions were answered, but if not, feel free to email me directly (dmayr@library.windham.nh.us).

I want to apologize for my ineptness in showing attendees how to find a list of RTG kit titles on the NHU-PAC.  It seems I was in the NHSL catalog and not the NHU-PAC!  Duh!

To find a list, go to the NHU-PAC and type READS-TO-GO [kit] into the "title contains" search box.  (You can also do a title search in the ILL screen).  This should bring up all the titles.  You can also type in READS-TO-GO without [kit], but you will get a few extraneous titles.

It was suggested by attendees, that if you want to borrow a kit you should call or email the host library before putting in a request through the automated ILL system.  Many kits have holds, so the host libraries will tell you how they want to handle the request.

We received many suggestions of titles to be included in the future book discussion kits--many thanks!  Christine Tarrio was the winner of our "Rewards" prize.

There was a suggestion that The Time Traveler's Wife be a kit.  It already is!  The kit is held by the Dover P.L.

Other suggested titles do not fall within our guidelines.  For instance, The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay.  This book came out in 1989 and does not qualify as current.  Another suggestion was Deep Economy by Bill McKibben.  This title is current, and it is discussable, but there is no demand for it.  If a group wants to use it, then there are 70+ libraries that own the title.  Our mission is to provide kits of titles that are in high demand.  The Dangerous Days of Daniel X by James Patterson was suggested also.  This title is a young adult book, and goal is to provide material for adult readers.

I will write more about RTG in the days to come!  --Diane Mayr

READS-TO-GO Request

Bedford P.L. hosts one of the Three Cups of Tea kits, which is in VERY high demand at this time.  Emily Weiss tells me that the kit is booked through the fall and she is refusing all NHU-PAC requests.  But, she also wants to add requesting libraries to her holds list if they want to be added, so, this requires her following up on the refused request.  This is quite a bit of extra work, so she is asking that those who wish to borrow the kit to contact her directly, and to NOT go through the NHU-PAC at this time.

Emily asked the RTG committee if it has another way of handling requests.  Good question.  We believe the system as it has been set up works for most, BUT, we are open to discussing the issue.  We have arranged to have a slot at the upcoming NHLA spring conference to meet with librarians to discuss RTG problems and solutions.  Information will be forthcoming.  If you are not able to partake in our discussion, please send your questions/concerns/comments directly to me:

Book Discussion group article

There was an article in the New York Times last week entitled, "Fought Over Any Good Books Lately?" It may be of interest to librarians, and anyone else involved in book discussion groups.  Book discussions are not all fun and games!

I Forgot to Mention

If you host a READS-TO-GO kit and it isn't circulating at the moment, feel free to contact me and I'll mention it here on the blog!  Thanks!

Kit Available

Stiff: the curious lives of human cadavers by Mary Roach is available for your book group to borrow.  It's currently sitting on the shelf at the Nesmith Library and would love to take a ride in the van to your library.

from the Introduction to Stiff: "This book is not about death as in dying.  Death, as in dying, is sad and profound.  There is nothing funny about losing someone you love, or about being the person about to be lost.  This book is about the already dead, the anonymous, behind-the-scenes dead."

One thing I'll tell you, the discussion of this book won't be dull!  If you'd like to book this kit, contact Lois at lfreeston@library.windham.nh.us.

NHU-PAC and READS-TO-GO

In my earlier entry about 9 new READS-TO-GO kits, I failed to mention that all RTG kits can be found and borrowed through NHU-PAC and NHAIS ILL, thanks to the support of the New Hampshire State Library staff. We couldn't do any of this without them!

9 New READS-TO-GO Kits!!

The READS-TO-GO committee is proud to announce that information about 8 new titles and 9 new kits has been added to the READS-TO-GO website. The eight new titles are 1,000 White Women, Eat, Pray, Love, March, Middlesex, The Road, Shadow of the Wind, The Time Traveler's Wife, and Without a Map. There is also a second kit of 15 copies of Three Cups of Tea.

For each title, the RTG website lists how to check for the kit’s availability. In some cases, a direct link to the record in the host library’s online catalog is provided. (How convenient is that ?!) In other cases, contact information is provided for the library’s RTG coordinator. In addition, discussion questions for the new titles are also available on the Discussion Questions page.

So we encourage you to take advantage of this very popular service. We hope to be adding even more titles to the collection in the coming months.

READS-To-Go-Go

If you missed the READS-To-Go sessions at NHLA's conference, then all I can say is you missed out on a lot of fun. Even though this new READS program alone would get any librarian excited, RTG's creators outdid themselves donning costumes and performing numerous outlandish skits based on such famous gameshows as Family Feud and Lets Make a Deal to outline the rational behind READS-To-Go and its many well thought out features and processes.

But perhaps you still aren't familiar with RTG. Never fear, READS-To-Go has its own new website that is rapidly adding more information. Right now, you can browse a list of the more than twenty popular book titles that will be available in book bags along with kits including discussion questions and much, much more. So please visit the new website regularly and get your book groups ready to participate in this enthusiastic, innovative program.
