Librarians are invited to visit the Children's Book Review, which will take place the week of November 16 at the Weeks Memorial Library in Lancaster.  The Review will be open at 3:00 pm on Monday, November 16 and will be available during library hours every day that week during library hours until noon on Saturday, November 21.  Librarians may come and preview more than 300 new titles in children's and teen fiction and nonfiction.  They can also select several new books that will be sent to them via van following the Review.  The books that will be available at the Review can be found on the Children's Book Review page of NHU-PAC.  (On the opening page of NHU-PAC, click on the Librarian's Tools tab.  Then, select the Children's Book Review link on the purple bar.  You will then come to a page that offers links to the list of books in the November Review.)

Available are:

• “Juvenile Non-Fiction Collection Development & Management” in Haverhill
• “The Reference Interview” in Lancaster
• “The Reference Answer” in Lancaster (and a special bargain combo registration for both reference courses together)
• “Librarian Orientation” to NHSL

In case you don’t subscribe to the Nhais list, here’s an important update from the State Librarian regarding downloadable audiobooks for iPods…

“We are happy to announce that the NH Downloadable Audiobooks Consortium is now able to purchase MP3 audiobooks! MP3 audiobooks contain no DRM (Digital Rights Management) and are compatible with any music player, including iPods and Mac computers.

Up until this point, our current collection of digital audiobooks contains approximately 2400 unique titles in WMA (Windows Media Audio) format. These titles cannot be played on iPods or Mac computers. Only soon-to-be-purchased MP3 titles will be compatible with iPods and Macs.

Mac users will need to download a Mac-compatible version of the OverDrive Media Console prior to using the service and will only be able to checkout MP3 audiobook titles.

At this point of time, not all publishers provide their content in MP3 format. The Consortium will still purchase much of its content in WMA format, but if there is a choice between the two formats for any given title, the MP3 format will be purchased.

The group of audiobook selectors are preparing a purchase order of MP3 titles. After the order is submitted, OverDrive will need to make changes to the site to incorporate the new format. Expect the new MP3 titles to arrive by April 1.

This spring Consortium libraries will need to submit their patron numbers to OverDrive for the purpose of building a new patron authentication system.”

I am pleased to announce that the NHLA Executive Board at its February meeting moved to donate $3,000 to the Kids, Books and the Arts 2009 Project. This is the second year that NHLA has donated money to the project. Kids, Books and the Arts is a project of the New Hampshire State Library in cooperation with CHILIS. The objectives of the project are to 1) encourage arts programming in communities that have offered limited or no arts programs, 2) introduce library audiences to a variety of art forms, 3) encourage artists to adapt their art form to a thematic program of interest to children, and 4) strengthen the partnership between the arts community and public libraries.

Hot off the press from the Center for the Book blog...

"The 2007 nominees for the Ladybug Picture Book Award were announced this past February and voting materials are now available. Voting for the 2007 Ladybug Picture Book Award should be held during Children's Book Week, November 12-18, 2007. All votes MUST be received at the Center for the Book (mailing info is on the tally sheet) by November 30, 2007. Votes recieved after that date will NOT be counted. The winning book will be announced on the Center for the Book blog, and on this web site, in mid-December 2007."
