We are pleased to announce that Dr. Camila Alire, ALA President-Elect, will be joining us at the next New England Library Association (NELA) Annual Conference in October 2009. Dr. Alire will be leading a special ALA Forum on Sunday, October 18. Share your thoughts on how ALA should focus its efforts in the next five years. As her presidential initiatives, Dr. Alire will also be sharing her expertise and innovative ideas about Library Advocacy and Literacy in a presentation on Monday, October 19. Mark your calendar for NELA Counterparts!

Come one! Come all! Librarians, Library workers, Trustees, Friends of Libraries, and past, present, or future library leaders...

This summer, the New England Library Association will present a unique opportunity for you to attend a mindful and meaningful mini-conference in the New England region. This is NELA Counterparts.

Counterparts 2009 is a two-day educational event for NELA members, state library association members, consortia members and any other interested persons. Scheduled for Thursday and Friday, July 16-17 on the Connecticut College (New London) campus, this year's program is no exception.

Thursday afternoon's presentation will be "The Role of Libraries in Promoting Civic Engagement" with keynote speaker Dr. Nancy Kranich, Civic Librarian, Past President ALA, and Lecturer and Special Projects Librarian at Rutgers University.

With a minimal cost for a dorm room overnight, Friday's session includes a component of information exchange among attendees and association officers.

Please join us beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 16th and concluding Friday, July 17th by 1:00 p.m. This 24-hour program offer is an exceptional learning and networking experience among library workers in all of New England. The NELA Counterparts experience builds stronger organizations and creates opportunities to make personal contacts that last a lifetime.

You are welcome to sign up for any or all events, including Thursday afternoon, Thursday evening (wine and dinner), Thursday overnight, and/or Friday morning session. The program will conclude Friday by 1:00 p.m. and a boxed lunch will be provided.

There is a Friday night overnight option for participants. spend the afternoon and evening on the Connecticut coastline. Connecticut College is easy driving distance to Mystic Seaport, Mystic Aquarium, and the Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods casinos and other attractions.

2009 Emerson Greenaway Nominations Sought

Wanted: Great Librarians ...
 
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2009 Emerson Greenaway Award, which recognizes individuals who have had a "demonstrated impact on the library field in the New England region."
 
Established by the New England Library Association in 1988, the award honors Emerson Greenaway, an innovator in library organization and practice in the 1940's and 1950's. Mr. Greenaway received the first award, and subsequent recipients include Eleanor Hashem, Donald Vincent, Ann Flowers, Richard Olsen, Ching-Chi-Chen, Liz Futas, Anne Reynolds, Patricia Klinck, Marshall Keyes, Margo Crist, Kris Kardokas, Shirley Adamovich, Nolan Lushington, Lucy Gangone, and last year’s recipient Melody Allen.
 
Nominees must be, or have been, members of NELA. He or she should have made a major contribution to the field of librarianship in New England, such as:

* Development of outstanding services in a field of expertise, such as administration, reference services, technical services, etc.
 
* Involvement with developing library cooperation in New England
 
* Outstanding leadership in the field.
 
Nominations include a written statement chronicling the nominee's achievements, his or her resume, and three letters of support, at least two of which are from persons outside the nominee's home state. The award may be given posthumously.

Counterparts 2009

Nancy KranichNELA Counterparts, a meeting of state library organization counterparts and other interested librarians, will be held this year on July 16 and 17, 2009, at Connecticut College in New London, CT. Amongst other activities, Nancy Kranich, past president of ALA, will give a workshop on the role of libraries in promoting civic engagement. All NHLA members are encouraged to attend. (You don't need to be an office holder in NHLA or one of its sections.) If you are interested in attending this year, please contact me so I can keep track of how many NHLAers will be going. It should be a lot of fun, and I hope NHLA will be well represented!

NELA Scholarships Announced

NELA just announced the winners of their 2008 awards scholarships for full and part-time students. In case you aren't familiar with these awards, the awards for full time students are $2,000, and those for part-time students are $1,000. According to the NELA website, "These awards provide financial assistance for qualifying students pursuing Master's degrees in Library and Information Science. They are open to New England residents who plan to continue their careers in the region. Students attending an ALA-accredited library school or program offered in New England or New York, or an accredited on-line program offered elsewhere, who have a demonstrated need for financial assistance, may apply."

Emerson Greenaway Award

NELA has a very special award which is presented at their annual conference. It is the Emerson Greenaway Distinguished Service Award for Librarianship. NELLS application deadline extended

The application deadline for the New England Library Association's leadership symposium, NELLS, has been extended to February 29th.

NELLS will be held July 28th through August 1st at the Rolling Ridge Conference Center in North Andover, MA.

Who can attend? NELLS students will be library professionals, paraprofessionals, or volunteers (Trustees, Friends, etc.) in mid-career (3 to 15 years experience in or with libraries). Attendees may be recommended by someone or may make their own application for this leadership training. Each student must be a member of his or her state association or NELA in order to apply.

Looking for future library leaders!

NELA is looking for current and future leaders to attend the New England Library Leadership Symposium (NELLS) from July 28th-August 1, 2008. If you are interested in developing your leadership skills and potential, go to http://www.nelib.org for the application and brochure. But don't wait - the application deadline is January 25, 2008.

NELLS is an intensive 4-day course designed for up-and-coming library leaders. The purpose of this symposium is to foster the development of tomorrow's leaders who are interested in working with state and regional library associations. NELLS has been created through a cooperative effort of the New England Library Association and all six New England state library associations.

NELA games - 3 golfers and legion of fans needed

I am searching among the New Hampshire delegation attending NELA for three talented volunteers to demonstrate their miniature golfing prowess at the annual NELA games on Monday, October 15th from 5:30 to 6:30 at the Sturbridge Host Hotel course. Not only will you have the opportunity to win the coveted SNAIL and establish your reputation statewide as distinguished athletes, but you can also sport creative attire to distinguish yourselves even further...(NOTE: if you would prefer to be an admiring spectator at the games, your support will be crucial to our players' success.)  Please  e-mail  or call  the Hampton Falls Free Library to let me know of your interest/availability and I will report the results.

NELA Counterparts, a meeting of state organization counterparts and other interested librarians, is a one day conference that will be held at Assumption College in Worcester on Friday, July 20th. Dee Kelsey, author of Great Meetings! Great Results!, will lead a morning discussion on how to plan and conduct productive meetings.
