NHLA Conference

Thanks to all the conference planners and those who manned the tables and kept things running smoothly.  The READS-TO-GO committee enjoyed our discussion roundtable: Read Any Good Books Lately?  And, from the conference evaluations it seems that the participants did too!

On the www.reads-to-go.org blog we have summarized our part in last week's conference.  Check it out, and check back over the next week or so when we'll be announcing the newest kit titles!

Small Libraries Summit a Big Hit

Just a quick note to let everyone know how well the Small Libraries Summit went yesterday. We had a full room of over 70 attendees who participated in lively discussions throughout the day. All three sessions went well, and everyone enjoyed the children's book review, the book swap and even the food! Most importantly, the attendees unanimously expressed their hope that the event would happen again in the future.

I created a few pages on the NHLA wiki that contain my notes from the sessions and links to a number of the online resources that were mentioned. Here are links to the three pages.

Thanks again to everyone on the Summit Committee and to all our presenters!

NHLA/NHEMA Conference???

Coming up next week, I will be meeting with two members of NHEMA to begin discusssing a number of topics including the concept of holding a joint NHLA/NHEMA conference at some point in the future. The NHLA Executive Board has begun discussing this topic, but I would like to hear from as many NHLA members as possible. Just leave a comment to this entry, or if you would prefer sending me an email directly, send it to skbutzel at cityofportsmouth dot com. Why would you like or not like to see NHLA hold a joint conference with NHEMA? Be as specific as possible. If we were to hold a joint conference at some point in the future, how could it better than previous joint conferences? Finally, if you would like to be a member of a future NHLA conference committee, please let me know that as well.

Thanks,
Steve Butzel

Save the date!

The NHLA Fall Business meeting will be held on Thursday, November 5th from 9 to 3 at the Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Hotel.  Although the program hasn't been printed yet, the working title for the 1 day conference is "Relax, Respect, Reflect, Redux" - I use the term "working" loosely, because my primary goal is for us to mix business with pleasure, putting the emphasis on fun. More information will be forthcoming soon.

Hope to see your smiling faces there!

Audio Recordings of NHLA Spring Conference Presentations

The first batch of audio recordings from the 2009 Spring Conference is now available online at http://nhlibrarians.org/springconference09/day_one_session_one.html. The three sessions for which audio recordings are available so far are:

  • "Omeka: An Open Source Web-based Publishing Platform for Digital Exhibits and More" by Tom Scheinfeldt, Managing Director, George Mason University
  • "How to Be Ready When Law Enforcement Comes Knocking" by Gail Weymouth, Director, Sherburne Memorial Library
  • "Meet the Summer Reading Program 2009 Artist," by Karel Hayes, Author
In each case, the first 30-60 seconds of the recording includes the introduction of the speaker, which is usually very quiet since the person giving the introduction wasn't holding a microphone. But be patient, and once the main speaker begins speaking, you'll hear him or her loud and clear.

I'd like to thank the voting members of the NHLA Executive Board for supporting the funding of this project. I sincerely hope that our members will be given the time needed to listen to these recordings. For those of you who do get to listen to the recordings, please leave us a comment or send us your thoughts via this link.

"I am a follower, therefore I must lead" - 2009 Catherine Redden Lecture

A transcript of the 2009 Catherine Redden Lecture presented by Jean Amaral on the first day of the Spring Conference is now available to be downloaded as a PDF. (The presentation was also video recorded and will eventually be made available on YouTube. I'll post an announcement on this blog when it is available.) I highly recommend that you download the transcript and read through it, and have a conversation with your colleagues about the issues she raised.

In the meantime, here are a few excerpts from her talk entitled "Follower is the New Leader, or Leading from Anywhere."

"I’d like to talk with you about leadership in the 21st century. It is said that Voltaire wrote, 'I am a leader, therefore I must follow.”' I think it’s time we turned this idea on its head. In the 21st century, our mantra should be “I am a follower, therefore I must lead.

But let me be clear: You might think with this call to action that I am a leader myself, that I have aspirations to become a library director or head of reference, that leadership comes naturally to me. None of this is true...But the truth is, leadership does not come naturally to me, and when in situations where it’s called for, I have to work hard and consciously at it."

"In servant leadership, the leader becomes a follower, and I would argue as well, followers are more likely to become leaders...Servant Leadership is not about a personal quest for power, prestige, or material rewards. Instead . . . leadership begins with a true motivation to serve others.

Rather than controlling or wielding power, the servant-leader works to build a solid foundation of shared goals by (1) listening deeply to understand the needs and concerns of others; (2) working thoughtfully to help build a creative consensus; and (3) honoring the paradox of polarized parties and working to create ‘third right answers’ that rise above the compromise of ‘we/they’ negotiations.

The focus of Servant Leadership is on sharing information, building a common vision, self-management, high levels of interdependence, learning from mistakes, encouraging creative input from every team member, and questioning present assumptions and mental models.” (p. 144) Now that’s leadership I can get behind, and leadership I want to strive for in my own actions as a follower."

You can download the full speech here and soon it willbe available on the Catherine Redden Lecture Series webpage as well.

READS-TO-GO Request

Bedford P.L. hosts one of the Three Cups of Tea kits, which is in VERY high demand at this time.  Emily Weiss tells me that the kit is booked through the fall and she is refusing all NHU-PAC requests.  But, she also wants to add requesting libraries to her holds list if they want to be added, so, this requires her following up on the refused request.  This is quite a bit of extra work, so she is asking that those who wish to borrow the kit to contact her directly, and to NOT go through the NHU-PAC at this time.

Emily asked the RTG committee if it has another way of handling requests.  Good question.  We believe the system as it has been set up works for most, BUT, we are open to discussing the issue.  We have arranged to have a slot at the upcoming NHLA spring conference to meet with librarians to discuss RTG problems and solutions.  Information will be forthcoming.  If you are not able to partake in our discussion, please send your questions/concerns/comments directly to me:

NHLA Annual Meeting Speaker Preview #3

Professor WoodsThe featured speaker for the mid-day session "Federated Searching Case Study: NELLCO" will be Roberta Woods, Assistant Professor of Research at the Franklin Pierce Law Center and Reference and Electronic Resources Librarian at the Pierce Law Library.

Besides selecting, evaluating and making electronic resources available online and in the Law Library, Professor Woods chairs a NELLCO (New England Law Library Consortium) committee working on a high-tech solution to create an open source search system that will enable researchers to search all of the library’s digital holdings with one search. The project was awarded a grant by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in 2007 and runs through Nov. 30, 2009.

Professor Woods is uniquely qualified to address the electronic resource needs of the Law Library. She holds bachelor’s degrees in computer and library sciences. From her perspective, solutions to the increasingly technical aspects of libraries require technological creativity and a willingness to open up to ever expanding possibilities. “Technology offers a wonderful tool for libraries and researchers.” Professor Woods is always on the lookout to bring the library closer to the realm of today’s electronic researcher.

NHLA Annual Meeting Speaker Preview #2

Two additional speakers in the Adult Literacy Program session will be Nancy Ladd and Louise Hazen from the Pillsbury Free Library in Warner, NH. Here's a bit of background about them and their literacy program.

Nancy Ladd and Louise Hazen

Nancy Ladd, Library Director at Pillsbury Free Library in Warner NH since 1985, started adult literacy programming in 1999 at the library with the assistance of Louise Hazen, as volunteer coordinator, and an LSTA Literacy Program grant for materials and publicity.

Louise Hazen holds an M. Ed. with various certifications including Reading Specialist, General Special Education and Learning Disabilities. In addition to working part time at the Pillsbury Free Library, she volunteers as the Adult Literacy Program coordinator and as a literacy tutor. Prior to working at the library, she was frequently involved in volunteer adult literacy work during her career in teaching.

Started in 2000, the Adult Literacy Program at Pillsbury Free Library is volunteer-based, with library funding and grants providing materials and publicity as needed.  Second Start Adult Tutorial Program of Merrimack County provides free G.E.D. pretest clinics, some materials, and Tutor education. They also partner with Kearsarge Regional High School’s Adult Diploma Program, which was begun in 2004. Some grants included funding for materials and programs in several other area libraries.

Food Drive at NELA Annual Conference

NELA Executive Board and NELA Conference Committee 2008 are planning a non-perishable food drive to benefit the New Hampshire Food Bank in Manchester, but we can’t do it without your help.

While you are preparing to pack for the Annual Conference, please consider setting aside some room in your suitcase for one or two non-perishable food items.

Urgently Needed Items

·       Protein items such as canned tuna or chicken and canned stews

·       Peanut butter

·       100% juice boxes (no glass please)

·       Canned fruits in light syrup, applesauce

·       Canned vegetables, tomatoes and tomato sauce

·       Soups

·       Healthy cereals

·       Pasta, rice

·       Dry beans

Donations may be left in the Conference Exhibit Hall. Arrangements are being made for Tuesday afternoon pick-up. Let’s work together to fill this Food pantry!

Also, the New Hampshire Electric Co-op has issued a financial Food Bank Challenge. Until October 31, 2008, they will match dollar for dollar all of the money raised through their Foundation. For more information on monetary donation, read the Food Bank Challenge website.

Thank you for your assistance in the effort to bring relief and aid to those much in need.

Request or plea for donations for NHLA fall conference raffle

At our last NHLA meeting, the board decided to use the money that we raise from our spring and fall conference raffles to bring in speakers that we might pass on otherwise due to cost factors. If your library, group, or just you yourself can donate some items for the fall conference raffle, you’ll be helping to bring in some great speakers! You can therefore expect these pleas for donations every six months or so (my apologies in advance).

Thanks again to everyone who donated items for the spring conference raffle. We raised over $600 from that effort. Also, thanks very much in advance to anyone who can send items for the upcoming raffle.

Get your game face on!

In two weeks, New Hampshire librarians will be competing against other New England librarians and vendors for the coveted Snail in a NELA-revised version of Trivial Pursuit.  Since New Hampshire is the host for this year's conference, and since New Hampshire librarians are singularly smart, it behooves us to beat our brethren and sistren. We're looking for several intrepid players and lots of audience participation. Please contact Judy Haskell at hamptonfalls.library@comcast.net if you're ready for this challenge!

Darrell Eifert has made available several documents from his "Looking Good on a Budget" presentation, including PowerPoint and Open Office presentation files as well as Word and PDF files. Conference Presentation Materials

I have created a new page on our website where anyone can download presentation materials from the conference. The web address is http://www.nhlibrarians.org/presentations.html. A Time of Transition at NHLA

This time of year is a time of transition as the existing NHLA year comes to an end and a new one begins following the November annual meeting. The outgoing NHLA Executive Board will be meeting with the incoming board in December to hand over responsibilities and any wisdom they have to offer. That meeting takes place on December 18th, and we will post draft minutes from that meeting soon thereafter.

In the meantime, the planning of a new "Information Technology" section within NHLA is well underway as incoming NHLA Vice President Steve Butzel is networking with all sorts of interested and exciting librarians and developing a plan. If you are interested in participating in this process, please email Steve.

And finally, arrangements for the NHLA Spring Conference INNOVATE IN '08: Library Basics and Beyond which takes place on May 21 and 22 in Concord at the Grappone Conference Center are being finalized as we speak. Be sure to register early for this stellar event!

Do you attend ALA, and if so, who pays for it?

I'd be interested in knowing how many NHLA members attend the ALA annual meeting or Midwinter meeting. How often do you go, and does your employer pay some or all of your way? Also, do you participate on any ALA committees? If so, do you think that committee work could be done online? Please leave a comment and be sure to include what kind of library you work for. Thanks!

NHLA conference highlights

When discussing how great the recent conference in Bretton Woods was at the Seacoast Co-op meeting this morning, I remembered that I had promised to post the collective wisdom gathered at the program on libraries and community relations. Hope that you find these ideas as worthwhile as I do!

How to create and sustain positive Library and Community Relations

  • Need to educate town government:
  1. newsletter for town department
  2. making pertinent statistics available on a regular basis
  3. showing a cost/benefit ratio for services
  • Use Event-Keeper and link it to town departments
  • Put library information on light bills, water bills, town notices
  • Do you have equipment another department could use, e.g. a typewriter?
  • Give complimentary copies of books to stakeholders, target audience
  • Create a community contacts book, with web contacts when available
  • Have a brochure of services for newcomers
  • See if you can help realtors create a “Welcome” kit for newcomers

What to do if there are less-than-perfect relationships with town departments

  1. Show appreciation
  2. Ask advice
  3. Invite them to your library or to co-sponsor events
  4. Ask them to judge a contest
  • Attend/participate in department meetings and communicate library happenings
  • Be a librarian OUTSIDE of the library
  • Join a service organization
  • Serve on a town committee
  • Teach people how to use databases that will help them in their work, e.g. “LearningExpress”
  • Purchase locally when possible
  • Ask to be a speaker for your library at various organizations
  • Host a non-profit showcase
  • Hold a candidates’ night

Respectfully submitted,
Judy Haskell

READS-To-Go-Go

If you missed the READS-To-Go sessions at NHLA's conference, then all I can say is you missed out on a lot of fun. Even though this new READS program alone would get any librarian excited, RTG's creators outdid themselves donning costumes and performing numerous outlandish skits based on such famous gameshows as Family Feud and Lets Make a Deal to outline the rational behind READS-To-Go and its many well thought out features and processes.

But perhaps you still aren't familiar with RTG. Never fear, READS-To-Go has its own new website that is rapidly adding more information. Right now, you can browse a list of the more than twenty popular book titles that will be available in book bags along with kits including discussion questions and much, much more. So please visit the new website regularly and get your book groups ready to participate in this enthusiastic, innovative program.

Register Today for Conference Hotel

Today is the cut off date to reserve a room at the unbelievable rate of $119 a night! If you are coming to the New Hampshire Libraries Conference, you may not know that the hotel extends its $119 rate for the remainder of the weekend to conference attendees. Previously we thought the Taste of New Hampshire was following our conference which is a plus for some and a minus for others. It turns out that the Taste of NH is the weekend before, so we have most of the hotel to ourselves. There is a lap pool, a heated outdoor pool and a 6 person jucazzi at the hotel. There is also shuttle access to the Bretton Woods sports complex, all a part of your accommodations. The main dining room will be open all weekend that includes an ala carte menu and Stickney's on Friday night. The hotel also provides free shuttle service to Fabyan's restaurant (train station). It is also possible for you to get room service anywhere on the main floor, so you can eat by the fireplace if you want. Laura Knoy is our dinner speaker on Thursday night.

For more information on the conference go to http://nhlibconf.org/

Just a remider that the third of three READS roundtables is meeting tomorrow, Friday, March 30th at the Pease Public Library Plymouth from 10-12. Come play a game - Ups and Downs in LibraryLand, a board game based on Chutes & Ladders.
  • Budget cut - slide back!
  • Patron thanks you for your help - skip ahead!
  • Can't answer the library literature trivia? Stuck!
  • And avoid the black hole of burnout at all costs!

Also, the CHILIS Spring Conference takes place next Thursday, April 5th at Sawyer’s Banquet Facility in Plaistow, NH. For more info, visit the CHILIS Spring Conference webpage, http://www.chilisnh.org/springcon.html.

Upcoming NHLA Conference

Libraries 2007As I'm sure many of you know, NHLA is holding a two-day conference on May 17th and 18th at the Mount Washington Hotel, and the theme is "Connecting NH Libraries". As has been the custom for some time, the conference is a joint endeavor with the New Hampshire Educational Media Association, and from what I've learned so far, the conference program is going to be outstanding. Session topics range from graphic novels to disaster planning to "nuts and bolts" of audiobooks to social software to serving GLBTQ teens. So if you haven't registered already and/or made your hotel reservations, head over to http://nhlibconf.org and get connected.
