CHILIS Fall Conference, now is the time!

Ever thought about attending a CHILIS conference even though you aren't a children's librarian? If so, this is a great year to go. The day will feature programs by Mary Danko, librarian, and nationally acclaimed speaker Anita Silvey, author, publisher and reviewer. (Read more about Ms. Silvey below.) The all-day conference costs $35 for CHILIS members and $45 for non-CHILIS members.

More about Anita Silvey
From The author of 100 Best Books for Children and 500 Great Books for Teens Anita Silvey has devoted 35 years to promoting books that will turn the young -- and families -- into readers. To do this she has appeared frequently on NPR, "The Today Show," "60 Minutes," and radio programs in the United States and Canada to talk about books for children and teenagers. Summer Reading Vote

At the CHILIS Spring Conference, CHILIS members voted to join the Collaborative Summer Library Program, a national summer reading program that includes 48 states.  CHILIS will begin its membership beginning with the 2010 summer reading program.  Membership in CSLP will offer participating NH libraries manuals for both children's and teen's summer reading programs as well as the opportunity to buy low-cost bookmarks, posters, certificates and other incentives.

Before the vote, discussion centered on the advantages and disadvantage of joining a national collaborative.  Members praised the work and dedication of the NH Summer Reading Committee, which has developed a statewide program since 1990.  The NH Summer Reading Program has showcased the work of NH illustrators such as Chris Demarest, True Kelley, Tomi dePaola, Marty Kelley, Tracy Carrier, and Karel Hayes--to name a few.

The NH Summer Reading Committee will still meet to choose the Kids, Books and the Arts Roster, to plan the SRP kick-off at the conference and to develop NH-related summer reading activities to complement  the national theme.  In addition, the committee's reduced responsibilities will allow members to work on other important CHILIS projects both old and new.

In the meantime, the 2009 NH Summer Reading Program--"Summertime...and the Reading is Easy" is well underway.  Children's librarians around the state are looking forward to celebrating the joys of summer and of reading with their communities by developing fun programs and activities.  For more information on this year's SRP, check the CHILIS website.

NHLA Donates $3,000 to the Kids, Books and the Arts 2009 Project

I am pleased to announce that the NHLA Executive Board at its February meeting moved to donate $3,000 to the Kids, Books and the Arts 2009 Project. This is the second year that NHLA has donated money to the project. Kids, Books and the Arts is a project of the New Hampshire State Library in cooperation with CHILIS. The objectives of the project are to 1) encourage arts programming in communities that have offered limited or no arts programs, 2) introduce library audiences to a variety of art forms, 3) encourage artists to adapt their art form to a thematic program of interest to children, and 4) strengthen the partnership between the arts community and public libraries.

To learn more about this terrific program and to learn how to apply for a Kids, Books and the Arts grant, visit this page, http://www.nh.gov/nhsl/services/librarians/kids_books.html, in the New Hampshire State Library website.

If you aren't a children's librarian at a public library, please be sure to contact a children's librarian at your local public library and make sure that she/he is aware of this program.

Between the Lions creators bring a new multi-media music project to Public Libraries!

Very nice speaking with you today. Included below is a general project description, short benefits summary, and how the program works. I really appreciate you forwarding the opportunity state-wide. We are looking forward to partnering with public libraries in New Hampshire so that ALL kids can get the benefits of the award-winning curriculum. Please preview a full ½ hour episode of LOMAX when you get the chance: http://www.cpbn.org/program/lomax-hound-music.

We typically form partnerships with associations or systems to implement the educational outreach for this project and provide group in-service trainings once a year. Any additional feedback on how we can move forward is greatly appreciated.

Warm Regards,
Gene

www.MelodyHounds.com

Melody Hounds® is a new curriculum-based, multi-media music program designed to help ALL kids develop an artful sense of melody and rhythm.

We are currently running the curriculum/classes in over 150 local YMCAs Nationally, helping 10,000+ kids ages 2.5 to 7 years enhance their musical intelligence. The “Media” element of our project comes by way of a curriculum-based TV series called Lomax, The Hound of Music™ airing on Public Television this fall. The LOMAX TV series mirrors the Melody Hounds® music classes being run in a growing number of locations across the country.

Lomax: The Hound of Music is a new, highly participatory, 13-part children's series premiering on PBS October 6th 2008. Our partners creating the series are the same people that brought you Between the Lions®. Please watch a full ½ hour episode of LOMAX when you get the chance: http://www.cpbn.org/program/lomax-hound-music.

Starting now, we are extending this new program opportunity to Public Libraries across the United States.

Benefits Summary:

All children receiving Melody Hounds are getting numerous cross-curricular benefits in addition to enhancing their musical development. They are learning mathematical concepts through the beat exercises, language development through songs/rhymes, even learning our country's history through songtales. The kids are also learning social skills, such as waiting their turn, reducing performance anxiety, and building self-esteem. Other concepts learned are critical thinking skills, expressive speech, fine and gross motor skills including awareness of body parts (Laban-wrote a complex code for body movement, we use this in our lessons), imagination, creativity, and cultural and moral values. All these wonderful aspects of the curriculum will be reinforced at home when LOMAX airs this fall. We also provide licensed sites with a parent letter to send home so parents can log-in to the parent section of www.melodyhounds.com and hopefully get involved at home!

How it works:

  1. Cost - $900 annual fee per library (this is our typical discounted association rate assuming all staff from each site can attend one group training and at least 4 libraries participate)
  2. Program Application - MH recommends the program be delivered to 10-15 kids at a time, 1 to 5 times a week, for 20-25 minutes at a time.
  3. Training – we provide an annual in-service training for all your staff. You will receive a new group training each year and there is no limit to the number of staff each site sends (training is included in the annual fee). Training lasts approximately 3 hours and anyone trained can effectively teach the program (i.e. you don't have to be a professional singer or musician).
  4. 2009 MH Kit - each licensed site receives an MH kit (all teaching materials fit into a portable duffel bag provided by Melody Hounds), and a new one each year that will correspond with the TV Series. Everything needed to operate the program is included in the MH kit.
  5. Website - as part of the program, your Melody Hounds parents will have exclusive access via user name & password (per licensed site) to the parent section of our website where they will find words from the songs/rhymes done in class and at-home activities.

Various NHLA Google Groups, or, How Do We Communicate

CommunicationYou may not know it, but some NHLA sections have created Google Groups for communicating within their section. Here are links to the Google Groups for the Information Technology Section and the Academics Section.

CHILIS has its own listserv, which you can access via their website, or here: http://maillist2.nh.gov/mailman/listinfo/chilis-l . CHILIS also has an online newsletter named Red Hot CHILIS News which you can also access via an RSS feed. Very cool.

Speaking of communication, another way to communicate with NHLA members is by leaving comments on blog entries. Recently, there was a technical glitch with our blogging software, and submitted comments weren't getting regularly reviewed and posted, but that's been fixed, and comments should be reviewed fairly quickly now. (In fact, if you submitted a comment in the last few months, it's been published earlier today.)

CHILIS Report from Marie Lejeune

The Spring CHILIS Conference is scheduled for Thursday, March 27th at Southern NH University in Manchester.  The focus of the conference will be a showcase of the artists/performers on the  Kids Books and the Arts Roster.

The theme for the 2008 Summer Reading Program is “G’day for Reading”, with art by Farmington cartoonist (and Library paraprofessional) Stephanie Piro.  Printed materials (bookmarks, certificates, etc.) are in the process of being sent to libraries: most should have already received them.  Posters will be available at the CHILIS conference.  T-Shirt orders are being taken until April 11. The artwork for the printed materials and the t-shirt can be seen on http://nhsrp2008.wetpaint.com/page/Artwork.

Voting for the Great Stone Face and Isinglass Awards will take place in April.

This year CHILIS created an award, to be given out annually, to recognize excellence in the field of Children’s Library Services.  We had a very strong group of nominees and the winner will be announced at the Spring CHILIS conference.

Your Library Association Hard at Work

I recently updated the NHLA's "Upcoming Events" webpage, and in doing so, was impressed by all the terrific programs our members have organized for us in the next 30 days. First, there is the CHILIS conference which takes place at the Portsmouth Public Library on Thursday, October 18th from 9am-3pm. Amongst the many topics discussed, one in particular is "Marketing Library Services to Teens with Technology." Should be interesting.

Then, on October 26th, the READS conference takes place at the Local Government Center in Concord, NH. The theme of the event is "People, Places and Things: Security in Today's Library" and registration is going through the roof!

But wait, there's more! On November 1st, NHLA's Fall Conference takes place at the Common Man Inn in Plymouth, NH. The theme of the conference is "The Modern Library: Service in the 21st Century: Graphic Novels, Programming and Social Software." The opening session "Entice, Educate and Excel with Comics!" sounds intriguing. And the closing session titled "Scriblio and Open Source Software for Libraries" features Casey Bisson, information architect at Plymouth State University. Very cool!

So get out there, network and enjoy learning from each other. The next 30 days should be a lot of fun!Laughing

Section By-laws

Hi Folks,

Steve Butzel gave us a wonderful clear and concise tutorial on posting an entry to the NHLA blog yesterday at the Executive Board meeting in Concord. Here’s my contribution:

As By-Laws Chair, one of my responsibilities is to ensure that each section has submitted a copy of its By-laws to the Executive Board each year – NHLA BY-LAWS, Article 6 -  Sections, Paragraph C -  Duties of the Sections. #2  “Present a current copy of the Section By-laws to the Executive Board each year.”

I’m attempting to earn my keep. Please send a current copy of your By-laws to me at credden@hampton.lib.nh.us. And Thank You,  Ann Hoey, for sending CHILIS By-laws first thing this morning!

Catherine Redden,
By-Laws Chair
