CHILIS Fall Conference, now is the time!

Ever thought about attending a CHILIS conference even though you aren't a children's librarian? If so, this is a great year to go. The day will feature programs by Mary Danko, librarian, and nationally acclaimed speaker Anita Silvey, author, publisher and reviewer. (Read more about Ms. Silvey below.) The all-day conference costs $35 for CHILIS members and $45 for non-CHILIS members.

You can find the registration form on the CHILIS website at http://www.nhlibrarians.org/chilis/.  Send the registration form along with your check payable to CHILIS to Nancy Lang at the Dunbarton Public Library, Then email Nancy Lang chilisnews@aol.com to tell her you plan on sending your registration and check this week.

More about Anita Silvey
From The author of 100 Best Books for Children and 500 Great Books for Teens Anita Silvey has devoted 35 years to promoting books that will turn the young -- and families -- into readers. To do this she has appeared frequently on NPR, "The Today Show," "60 Minutes," and radio programs in the United States and Canada to talk about books for children and teenagers. As  Publisher's Weekly  has said "It would be hard to find a more authoritative voice than Anita Silvey."

READS-TO-GO Update

I hope you've had the opportunity to look at our new BLOG.

If you host a RTG kit I would like to ask that you check the information listed for your library for accuracy.  This information is found under "Kit Titles."  If your kit was donated by a group, could you please send me the donor information so that I can give the group proper acknowledgment of their gift on the site.

Also, I'd like to recommend signing up to receive email updates to the page (look for the subscribe option on the right-hand side of the page).  We plan to put up a post whenever a new title is ready to go.  Many thanks.

Request for raffle baskets donations for NHLA fall conference

The number of donations for the spring conference raffle at Attitash was overwhelming! We had 15 raffle baskets, and we raised over $500 for the fall business meeting. Thanks again to everyone who contributed.

If you, your library, co-op or other organization would like to donate a raffle basket for the upcoming fall raffle at the Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Hotel Thursday, November 5th, that would be great! You can bring them with you to the meeting or route them to me at:

Library Use Value Calculator Updated

The Library Use Value Calculator on our site, http://www.nhlibrarians.org/calculator.html,  has been updated to include additional services such as music CDs, adult and child/YA books, and auditorium use. I've also changed the entry for database usage to something that I hope you find more intuitive. Rather than asking for months of EBSCO usage, I changed it to number of articles and other resources accessed via library databases. Let me know if you have suggestions for other improvements.

NHLA/NHEMA Conference???

Coming up next week, I will be meeting with two members of NHEMA to begin discusssing a number of topics including the concept of holding a joint NHLA/NHEMA conference at some point in the future. The NHLA Executive Board has begun discussing this topic, but I would like to hear from as many NHLA members as possible. Just leave a comment to this entry, or if you would prefer sending me an email directly, send it to skbutzel at cityofportsmouth dot com. Why would you like or not like to see NHLA hold a joint conference with NHEMA? Be as specific as possible. If we were to hold a joint conference at some point in the future, how could it better than previous joint conferences? Finally, if you would like to be a member of a future NHLA conference committee, please let me know that as well.

Thanks,
Steve Butzel

Save the date!

The NHLA Fall Business meeting will be held on Thursday, November 5th from 9 to 3 at the Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Hotel.  Although the program hasn't been printed yet, the working title for the 1 day conference is "Relax, Respect, Reflect, Redux" - I use the term "working" loosely, because my primary goal is for us to mix business with pleasure, putting the emphasis on fun. More information will be forthcoming soon.

Hope to see your smiling faces there!

New Site for READS-TO-GO

READS-TO-GO now has a blog!  You can get to it in three ways:  www.reads-to-go.org   www.readstogo.org  or www.reads-to-go.blogspot.com.  We have set it up to function as a website.  All the information you need should be available through links on the right hand side of the page.  If we've left anything out, please let us know.  There has already had a comment about the lists of titles requiring too much scrolling, so, over the next week we hope to cut some of the summaries to one paragraph to ease that problem a little.

Please feel free to use the comment feature, or the "contact us" link.  Thanks for all your patience over the past two years in which the kit program has been active.  We look forward to providing you with more kits in the near future--keep checking the blog!  Or, better yet, sign up on the blog to receive an email whenever a new post has been added.
