2010 ALA Emerging Leader Application Process Now Open

The American Library Association (ALA) is now accepting applications for the 2010 class of Emerging Leaders.  Applications can be found at http://www.ala.org/cfapps/emergingleaders. The deadline to apply is July 31, 2009.

An ALA division, round table, ethnic affiliate, state chapter or school library media affiliate will sponsor approximately one-third of the selected applicants.  Each sponsor will contribute $1,000 toward expenses ($500 for each conference).  Sponsorship is not required for participation in the program.

Applicants can indicate on the application which groups they want to consider them for sponsorship.  A list of sponsoring units is included as part of the online application. You can also check with your state association and/or state chapter to find out if they are participating and how to apply for their sponsorship.

No more than one person from any institution will be selected for participation in the program.  In order to be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be under 35 years of age or be a library worker of any age with fewer than 5 years experience working in a library.
  • Be able to attend both ALA conferences and work virtually in between each.
  • Be prepared to commit to serve on either an ALA, division, chapter or round table committee, task force or work group, or in your state or local professional library organization upon completion of program.
  • Be an ALA member or join upon selection if not already a member.

Program information will be available and updated at: http://www.ala.org/cfapps/emergingleaders/

For questions or more information regarding the program, contact Beatrice Calvin at bcalvin@ala.org

READS Award of Excellence

Summer is upon us, and librarians have until August 1 to submit their nominations for the annual READS Award of Excellence. This award is given to the New Hampshire librarian who is chosen for outstanding service in the fields of reference and adult services.

There's a good feeling in filling out a nomination form. It brings to mind positive qualities, and we all need positive thoughts in tough times. The library from which the winner is selected gets a big morale boost, and the attention from the community underscores the value of libraries at a time when making our case is very important.

Outstanding service happens in libraries of all sizes. Our 2008 winner, Michelle DuBreuil, Library Assistant at the Gordon-Nash Library in New Hampton, represents a smaller library than past winners, so we know that excellence can happen anywhere. You can learn more by exploring

Audio Recordings of NHLA Spring Conference Presentations

The first batch of audio recordings from the 2009 Spring Conference is now available online at http://nhlibrarians.org/springconference09/day_one_session_one.html. The three sessions for which audio recordings are available so far are:

  • "Omeka: An Open Source Web-based Publishing Platform for Digital Exhibits and More" by Tom Scheinfeldt, Managing Director, George Mason University
  • "How to Be Ready When Law Enforcement Comes Knocking" by Gail Weymouth, Director, Sherburne Memorial Library
  • "Meet the Summer Reading Program 2009 Artist," by Karel Hayes, Author
In each case, the first 30-60 seconds of the recording includes the introduction of the speaker, which is usually very quiet since the person giving the introduction wasn't holding a microphone. But be patient, and once the main speaker begins speaking, you'll hear him or her loud and clear.

I'd like to thank the voting members of the NHLA Executive Board for supporting the funding of this project. I sincerely hope that our members will be given the time needed to listen to these recordings. For those of you who do get to listen to the recordings, please leave us a comment or send us your thoughts via this link.
