45 Programs Scheduled for Annual Conference in May!

The conference committee has been hard at work to bring 45 exciting programs to the NHLA Spring Conference INNOVATE IN '08: Library Basics and Beyond.  The Grappone Center in Concord will host programs for all kinds of libraries from the one person library to the academic library.  Every time slot will have more than one choice for  young adult and children's service providers.  Our featured speaker, Marylaine Block who is the author of Neat New Stuff I Found on the Internet this Week and of her newest book, The Thriving Library:Successful Strategies for Challenging Times will speak at a gala reception at the New Hampshire Historical Society as well as offer a program the next day. A Time of Transition at NHLA

This time of year is a time of transition as the existing NHLA year comes to an end and a new one begins following the November annual meeting. The outgoing NHLA Executive Board will be meeting with the incoming board in December to hand over responsibilities and any wisdom they have to offer. That meeting takes place on December 18th, and we will post draft minutes from that meeting soon thereafter.

In the meantime, the planning of a new "Information Technology" section within NHLA is well underway as incoming NHLA Vice President Steve Butzel is networking with all sorts of interested and exciting librarians and developing a plan. If you are interested in participating in this process, please email Steve.

And finally, arrangements for the NHLA Spring Conference INNOVATE IN '08: Library Basics and Beyond which takes place on May 21 and 22 in Concord at the Grappone Conference Center are being finalized as we speak. Be sure to register early for this stellar event!

Do you attend ALA, and if so, who pays for it?

I'd be interested in knowing how many NHLA members attend the ALA annual meeting or Midwinter meeting. How often do you go, and does your employer pay some or all of your way? Also, do you participate on any ALA committees? If so, do you think that committee work could be done online? Please leave a comment and be sure to include what kind of library you work for. Thanks!

New Information Technology Section Forming

At the fall business meeting, I announced that I am planning to establish a new section within NHLA that will focus on information technology issues faced by librarians of all flavors. I envision the section discussing a wide range of IT issues. For example, we might discuss a Library 2.0 issue such as how to insert a tag cloud from LibraryThing into your catalog. We might also discuss more fundamental issues such as methods used to secure computers in different library settings. The sky is really the limit.

Who do I hope to attract to this section? Anyone who is interested in learning more about information technology and how it can be used to provide services in libraries. You do not have to be a techie, but you probably should look forward to learning about information technology. Maybe you would like to learn about web design or how instant messaging software is used as a reference tool. Maybe you are interested in learning about content management systems, digital library applications, and/or open-source software. It's all good!

So, if you would like to participate in this section, or even become an office holder, please contact me at steven.butzel@nashualibrary.org. I promise you I will make it worth your while.
